Prepare for Injection:

• Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water.
• Put on disposable gloves to maintain hygiene and safety.

Check Needle Indicator:

• Confirm the needle is unused by checking for the visible red indicator around the needle tip.

Attach the Needle:

• Clean the tip of the pre-filled insulin pen with an alcohol wipe.
• While holding the outer cover, gently push and screw the SoftTouch InsuPen needle clockwise onto the insulin pen until it is firmly attached and you feel resistance.

Prime the Insulin Pen:

• Ensure no air bubbles are visible in the insulin.
• Hold the insulin pen upright and perform the standard 2-unit priming procedure.
• You may notice a small amount of insulin appearing within the clear capsule—this is normal and confirms proper priming.
• If no insulin appears at the needle tip after priming, repeat this step until insulin is visible.

Dial Prescribed Dose:

• Adjust the insulin pen dial carefully to set your required insulin dosage.

Patient Preparation:

• Position the patient comfortably and ensure they’re relaxed.
• Clean the chosen injection site with an alcohol wipe if needed. Wait at least 20 seconds for the site to fully dry.

Injection Site Technique:

• Lift and gently fold the patient’s skin and fatty tissue according to best practice guidelines.
• Ensure the clear capsule of the needle sits flush against the patient’s skin to achieve the optimal injection angle.

Administer the Injection:

• Insert the needle gently at a 90-degree angle to the patient’s skin.
• Slowly press down on the insulin injector until the full prescribed dose is delivered.
• Maintain pressure and wait at least 10 seconds to ensure complete insulin delivery.

Withdraw the Needle Safely:

• Carefully remove the needle from the skin while maintaining the folded skin position.
• Release the skin fold gently after removing the needle.

Post-Injection Safety Confirmation:

• Confirm that the red indicator is no longer visible. This indicates the needle has automatically locked, ensuring optimal safety.

It’s normal to see a small amount of insulin remaining in the clear safety capsule or on the skin after injection. This occurs due to insulin residue from the priming process and does not indicate underdosing, especially as you’ve waited 10 seconds before withdrawal.

Injection Site Rotation:

• To prevent lipohypertrophy (fat buildup under the skin), always rotate the injection site.
• Choose injection points at least 2 inches from the previous injection site, and at least 2 inches away from the belly button area.

Disposal:

• Carefully unscrew and remove the SoftTouch InsuPen needle from the insulin pen.
• Dispose of the needle immediately into an approved sharps disposal container.

Wash hands:

• Remove your disposable gloves and discard them safely.
• Thoroughly wash your hands again after completing the procedure.
