Finding cockroaches in your kitchen, bathroom or pantry is never a pleasant experience. These unwanted visitors can be difficult to get rid of, especially when they find places to hide and have easy access to food and water.

For homeowners looking for alternatives to conventional insecticides, essential oils have become a popular option. From peppermint and eucalyptus to lemongrass and cedarwood, certain plant-derived oils are often promoted as natural ways to repel or kill cockroaches.

But do they actually work? And more importantly, can essential oils get rid of cockroaches permanently, or are they just temporary deterrent?

A 2026 study published in Scientific Reports investigated this question by testing commercially available essential oil-based insecticides against German cockroaches. The researchers found that while the products were highly effective when sprayed directly onto cockroaches, their ability to provide lasting control was considerably more limited.

Let's explore what the research found, why essential oils may not be enough to eliminate an infestation and what you can do to help keep cockroaches away from your home.

Why are essential oils used to repel cockroaches?

Essential oils are concentrated mixtures of naturally occurring compounds extracted from plants, including their leaves, flowers, bark and other parts.

They're commonly used in fragrances, personal care products and household cleaning products. However, certain essential oils also contain compounds that have attracted interest for their potential insecticidal and repellent properties.

Some of these compounds can affect insects when they come into direct contact with them, while others may influence their behaviour through their scent or other chemical properties.

This has led to growing interest in essential oil-based pest-control products, particularly among consumers looking for alternatives to conventional insecticides.

However, it's important to understand that repelling cockroaches and killing cockroaches are two different things.

Repellents discourage cockroaches from approaching or remaining in a particular area.
Insecticides are intended to kill cockroaches through mechanisms such as direct contact or exposure to treated surfaces.

A product that temporarily repels cockroaches may make them less visible in one area without reducing the overall population. Similarly, a spray that kills cockroaches on contact may not eliminate those hiding behind appliances, inside cabinets or within wall cavities.

This distinction is particularly important when considering whether essential oils can provide long-term pest control.

Which essential oils are commonly used against cockroaches?

Several essential oils are commonly used or promoted as natural cockroach repellents because of their strong scents and naturally occurring compounds.

Some of the most commonly discussed essential oils include:

Peppermint oil: Known for its strong, minty scent.
Eucalyptus oil: Has a distinctive, refreshing aroma.
Lavender oil: Recognised for its floral fragrance.
Tea tree oil: Has a strong, herbal scent.
Lemongrass oil: Known for its fresh, citrus-like aroma.
Citrus oils: Includes oils derived from oranges, lemons and other citrus fruits.
Cedarwood oil: Has a distinctive woody aroma.
Clove oil: Known for its strong, spicy scent.

These oils are sometimes used individually or combined in commercially available pest-control products.

However, not all essential oils are equally effective against cockroaches, and their effectiveness can depend on factors such as concentration, formulation and application method.

Do essential oils actually kill cockroaches? What the latest research says

While certain essential oils have demonstrated insecticidal properties in laboratory studies, an important question remains: How well do essential oil-based products work in conditions relevant to household pest control?

This was the focus of a 2026 study published in the scientific journal Scientific Reports.

The research was conducted by scientists from the University of Kentucky, who investigated whether commercially available essential oil-based insecticides could kill cockroaches and continue working after being applied to household surfaces.

What did the researchers investigate?

The researchers tested four commercial essential oil-based insecticides marketed for cockroach control. These products contained different combinations of ingredients, including peppermint oil, cedarwood oil, cinnamon oil, lemongrass oil, clove oil and geraniol.

The experiments involved two populations of German cockroaches (Blattella germanica): one susceptible to conventional insecticides and another with documented resistance to certain insecticides. German cockroaches are also one of the most common cockroach species found in Australian homes, making the study particularly relevant to household pest control in Australia.

The researchers examined three main questions:

Could the products kill cockroaches when sprayed directly onto them?
Would the products remain effective after drying on household surfaces?
Could treated surfaces discourage cockroaches from entering or remaining in an area?

Here's what they discovered.

Finding 1: Essential oil sprays can kill cockroaches on contact

The researchers first tested what happened when the products were sprayed directly onto cockroaches. The results showed that all four products caused more than 96% mortality within seven days following direct application under the laboratory conditions.

In most experiments, every cockroach exposed to the spray died.

These findings suggest that the tested essential oil-based formulations can be highly effective when applied directly to cockroaches, however, there is an important limitation.

Direct spraying represents a relatively favourable situation because the insect receives immediate exposure to the product. In a real household infestation, cockroaches often remain hidden in narrow gaps, behind appliances and other difficult-to-reach areas.

As a result, even an effective contact spray may not reach enough cockroaches to control the entire population.

Finding 2: Their effectiveness drops after drying

Next, the researchers investigated whether the products could continue killing cockroaches after being applied to household surfaces.

This is known as residual effectiveness.

A product with good residual activity can continue affecting insects that encounter a treated surface after the initial application. For the experiment, researchers applied three of the essential oil-based products to ceramic tiles and pine wood.

The treated surfaces were then left for:

24 hours
One week
One month

Cockroaches were subsequently exposed to the treated surfaces for four hours, and mortality was assessed over seven days.

Unlike the direct-spray experiments, the results showed considerably weaker performance. Most tests resulted in less than 10% mortality, although some treatments performed better under particular conditions.

One product showed comparatively stronger results on certain surfaces, but its effectiveness generally declined as the treated residue aged. Overall, the researchers concluded that the tested essential oil-based products provided poor residual control.

In simple terms, a spray that kills a cockroach immediately may do very little to another cockroach that walks across the same surface a day or more later. This is a major limitation when dealing with infestations involving insects that spend much of their time hidden.

Finding 3: Repellent effects may be short-lived

The researchers also investigated whether essential oil-treated surfaces could discourage cockroaches from entering certain areas.

In these experiments, cockroaches were given access to treated and untreated sections of ceramic tile. Researchers then measured how much time they spent on each surface.

Two products significantly reduced the time cockroaches spent on surfaces treated four hours earlier, however, much of this repellent effect disappeared when the treated surfaces had been left for 24 hours.

There was an exception: The product EcoVenger continued to demonstrate a repellent effect against one of the two cockroach populations tested.

The findings, therefore, suggest that some essential oil-based formulations may temporarily influence cockroach behaviour, but their effects may not last long. This is partly because many essential oil compounds are volatile, meaning they evaporate relatively quickly.

Why essential oils may not get rid of cockroaches permanently

If essential oil sprays can kill cockroaches, why might they struggle to eliminate an infestation?

The answer largely comes down to cockroach behaviour and the importance of reaching more than just the insects you can see.

1. Cockroaches are good at hiding

Cockroaches often shelter in narrow, dark spaces, including behind refrigerators, underneath sinks, inside cupboards and around plumbing.

German cockroaches are particularly well adapted to living indoors and can remain hidden for much of the day. This makes it difficult to reach every individual with a direct-contact spray. Even if several visible cockroaches are killed, others may remain concealed.

2. Cockroaches reproduce quickly

German cockroaches can reproduce rapidly when conditions are favourable. If an infestation isn't adequately controlled, surviving cockroaches may continue reproducing.

Killing a few adult cockroaches doesn't necessarily address the wider population, including immature cockroaches and egg cases.

3. Essential oils may not provide lasting protection

As demonstrated in the 2026 study, many essential oil-based formulations lose much of their effectiveness after application. Because cockroaches spend much of their time hiding, long-lasting control is particularly important.

A product that only works when sprayed directly onto insects may have limited impact on cockroaches that emerge later.

4. Repelling cockroaches doesn't necessarily eliminate them

Another consideration is that repellent products may encourage cockroaches to avoid a treated area.

Although this might seem beneficial, the insects may simply move to another untreated location. For example, cockroaches avoiding one kitchen cupboard could potentially seek shelter elsewhere.

Therefore, seeing fewer cockroaches in a particular area doesn't necessarily mean the infestation has been eliminated.

Are essential oils safe to use around the home?

Essential oils are often described as natural alternatives to conventional pest-control products.

However, natural doesn't automatically mean safe.

Essential oils contain concentrated chemical compounds, and their safety depends on factors such as concentration, formulation, exposure and how they're used.

Potential skin and eye irritation

Some essential oils can cause skin irritation, particularly when applied undiluted. Accidental eye exposure may also cause discomfort or irritation.

When using essential oil-based pest-control products, always follow the manufacturer's instructions and avoid unnecessary contact with skin and eyes.

Respiratory sensitivity

Strong fragrances and airborne compounds may irritate some people's respiratory systems. People with asthma, allergies or fragrance sensitivities may be particularly susceptible to discomfort.

Avoid spraying products near the face or using them in ways that create unnecessary inhalation exposure.

Risks to children and pets

Concentrated essential oils can pose risks if accidentally swallowed or improperly applied. Certain oils, including tea tree, eucalyptus, peppermint, citrus and wintergreen oils, can be harmful to pets, particularly cats and dogs. Exposure through ingestion, skin contact or inhalation may cause adverse reactions depending on the oil and concentration.

Keep essential oils and pest-control products securely stored away from children and pets, and always follow product-specific safety instructions.

Be careful with homemade essential oil sprays

Online recipes often recommend mixing essential oils with water or other household ingredients to create homemade cockroach sprays.

However, homemade mixtures may have inconsistent concentrations, uncertain effectiveness and potential safety risks. Combining different ingredients doesn't automatically make a product more effective or safer.

For household pest control, it's generally better to use products specifically labelled for the intended purpose and follow their directions.

What actually helps keep cockroaches away?

Although essential oil sprays may have some short-term effects, long-term cockroach management generally requires a broader approach.

This is often referred to as integrated pest management (IPM), which combines prevention, monitoring and appropriate control methods.

Here are several practical steps that may help reduce the likelihood of cockroach problems.

1. Keep food sources under control

Cockroaches are attracted to accessible food and organic residues.

To help reduce potential food sources:

Wipe down kitchen benches and dining surfaces after preparing or eating meals.
Clean up crumbs and food spills promptly.
Store dry foods in tightly sealed containers.
Avoid leaving dirty dishes in the sink overnight.
Clean underneath and behind kitchen appliances when accessible.

Even small amounts of food residue can provide nourishment for cockroaches.

2. Reduce access to water

Cockroaches also need moisture to survive. Leaking pipes, dripping taps and damp areas can create favourable conditions.

Check for plumbing leaks, remove standing water where practical and keep areas underneath sinks as dry as possible.

3. Seal potential entry points

Cockroaches may enter or move between rooms through gaps around pipes, cracks and other openings.

Inspect areas around plumbing, skirting boards, cabinets and doors. Sealing suitable gaps may help limit access to hiding places and reduce movement between areas.

4. Manage rubbish and clutter

Regularly empty household rubbish bins, particularly those containing food waste. Use bins with properly fitting lids and clean them when necessary.

Reducing unnecessary cardboard, paper and other clutter may also help remove potential hiding places.

5. Consider appropriate cockroach baits

For established German cockroach infestations, insecticidal baits can be an important part of an effective control strategy.

Baits work differently from contact sprays because cockroaches consume the bait rather than needing to be sprayed directly, however, effectiveness depends on factors such as correct placement, bait selection and the extent of the infestation.

Always follow the product label and keep pest-control products away from children and pets.

Avoid spraying repellents directly onto or near bait placements unless the product instructions specifically permit it, as this may interfere with bait acceptance.

Use cockroach traps to help capture and monitor cockroaches

Cockroach traps can also be useful for capturing cockroaches and monitoring their activity around the home.

For example, the Super Ninja Non-Toxic Cockroach Traps use a natural cockroach attractant and protein-based adhesive to lure and trap cockroaches without conventional insecticides.

Super Ninja cockroach trap non toxic and odourless

These traps can be placed in areas where cockroaches are commonly found, such as near kitchen appliances, underneath sinks and along walls, following the product instructions.

While sticky traps can help capture individual cockroaches and identify areas of activity, they may not be sufficient to eliminate an established infestation on their own. For more persistent problems, they are best used alongside good household hygiene and other appropriate pest-control measures.

6. Seek professional pest-control assistance

If cockroaches continue appearing despite preventive measures, professional pest-control assistance may be necessary.

A qualified pest-control professional can help identify the species, assess the infestation and recommend suitable treatment methods. This can be particularly important for persistent infestations in apartments, shared buildings or commercial premises.

Keeping your kitchen clean and hygienic

While regular cleaning alone may not eliminate an established cockroach infestation, it plays an important role in maintaining a hygienic household environment.

Kitchens are particularly important because food preparation, storage and waste disposal can provide cockroaches with opportunities to access food and moisture.

Keeping benches, appliances, cupboards and other frequently used surfaces clean can help reduce food residues that may attract pests. Regular cleaning also helps maintain general household hygiene, especially in areas where food is prepared or handled.

Some practical habits include:

Cleaning kitchen benches and food preparation surfaces regularly.
Wiping up spills promptly.
Removing grease and food residues from accessible areas around appliances.
Cleaning cupboard shelves and storage areas when needed.
Washing reusable cleaning cloths and replacing them when appropriate.
Emptying rubbish bins and keeping surrounding areas clean.
