The WisePen is generally not suitable for people who are completely blind, as the user must be able to locate and follow lines of printed text. It may also be difficult to use for people with limited hand control, significant tremors or difficulty operating a touchscreen.

Like any new assistive device, the WisePen can take some time and practice to use correctly. Scanning speed, angle and positioning can affect the results.

We recommend starting with clear, standard-sized printed text and practising with short sentences before moving on to longer documents.

Results may vary depending on the user’s individual vision, dexterity, reading ability and support needs.

Directions for use

Quick start

Power on – Press and hold the red Power button for ~3 seconds until the screen turns on. To power off, hold and select Power off (you can also reboot from the same menu).
Choose your menu language – On first use, select English (this sets the device’s UI language, not your translation language).
Connect to Wi-Fi – Go to Settings → Wi-Fi, pick your network and enter the password. First-time setup requires Wi-Fi.
Charge as needed – Use the included USB-C cable; charge from a 5V/1A power source.

Scan & read text aloud

Hold & glide correctly – Keep the pen tip flat on the paper, angle ~90°–75°, align the clear window with the centre of the line, then glide to the right at a steady speed.
Listen – The device reads captured text via its AI Reading Assistant (headphone/speaker options available in the device).

Use AI & translation tools

Open AI tools – Tap the AI icon on the main screen to access AI Scan & Solve, AI Homework Check, AI Dictionary, AI Lens, AI Chat.
Translate your way – Choose Text Translation, Speech Translation, or Photo Translation from the main menu.

Helpful tips

Status bar shows Wi-Fi, battery and Bluetooth at the top of the screen.
Battery life varies with settings/usage. (Standby and use-time guidance available in the manual.)
If the device ever freezes, force restart by holding the power button ~15 seconds.

Note about AI Chat usage

The WisePen AI Reader includes an AI Chat feature that allows users to ask questions and receive AI-generated responses directly on the device.

When activating the device for the first time, users receive 200 free AI usage credits per month for the first year. These credits are automatically provided from the device activation date.

Please note:

• AI credits reset each month and unused credits do not carry over to the following month.
• After the first year, continued use of AI features may require a paid membership.
• If additional credits are needed, a QR code is available on the device to purchase membership directly.

Turn on the device by holding the power button until the screen lights up.

Step 2: Connect to WiFi

When using the WisePen for the first time, you must be connected to WiFi.

Step 3: Start Using

Hold the pen at a 75 degree angle and drag over the selected text to scan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the pen read from screens (e.g., laptop, iPad) as well as paper?

WisePen is primarily designed to scan printed text from books, worksheets, documents, and other paper materials.

While it can scan text displayed on a computer, tablet, or phone screen, the accuracy may vary. Factors such as screen brightness, glare, resolution, and refresh rate can affect performance. For text scanning, it is recommended to scan digital screens slower than with printed material for better success.

For best results when working with digital content, we recommend using the built-in camera feature to take a photo of the screen. This method generally provides clearer and more accurate results than direct screen scanning.

Can I use the scanning pen in exam settings?

No, the WisePen AI Reader is not exam-approved because it includes on-board storage, and built-in AI (ChatGPT)—features most exam bodies prohibit. Policies vary by school and board, so if a reader aid is required, speak with the exam coordinator about their approved assistive technology list or reasonable-adjustment process.

Is there a microphone built into the scanning pen?

Yes! The pen has dual built-in microphones, so you can speak to it for speech translation and voice input with clear pickup

Is there a limit to using the AI Chat feature on the WisePen?

Yes. The WisePen AI Chat feature uses AI usage credits.

When you first activate your WisePen, you receive 200 free AI credits per month for the first year. Each AI request uses a small number of credits.

Important things to know:

Credits reset each month
Unused credits do not roll over to the next month
After the first year, continued use of AI features may require a membership subscription

If your credits have been used or the first-year period has ended, you can purchase additional AI access directly from the device by going to:

A QR code will appear that links to the membership purchase page.

Does using the WisePen require a steady scanning motion?

Yes. As the WisePen uses a handheld scanner to capture printed text, users need to guide the pen steadily along the line they want to scan. Keeping the pen reasonably straight and moving it in a smooth, continuous motion helps the scanner accurately capture the words.

This means some hand control is required when using the scanning function. If you're purchasing the WisePen for yourself or someone else, particularly someone who may have difficulty with fine hand movements, we recommend considering whether they will be comfortable guiding the pen steadily across printed text.

Can I return the WisePen if not suitable?

We can accept returns if the item is not opened or used within 30 days. However, we will deduct $25 from the refund to cover our shipping & restocking costs. If you have already opened and used the product, you will be charged a repackaging / restock / shipping fee of$99.50 if returned within 30 days of purchase date. After this time we cannot accept returns.

Please ensure you ask questions and do your research before purchasing to avoid charges.

If you are unsure, please ask us if you are able to borrow one for a trial. We offer free trials to schools and may extend that to some individuals. Shipping costs will be charged but deducted if you purchase a WisePen. Contact us for more information.
