Feeling bloated after a meal, noticing that your stomach feels unusually tight or full, or experiencing more wind than usual are all common digestive complaints. For some people, it happens occasionally after a particularly large meal. For others, gas and bloating seem to appear regularly, making it harder to pinpoint exactly what's causing them.
While food is often the first thing we blame, bloating isn't always as simple as having eaten the “wrong” thing. We'll break down some of the most common causes of gas and bloating, what may be happening inside your digestive system, and simple changes that may help.
Gas and bloating often occur together, so it's easy to think they're the same thing. However, they actually describe different digestive experiences, and feeling bloated doesn't always mean there is an excessive amount of gas in your gut.
Having some gas in your digestive system is completely normal. It mainly comes from two sources: air that you swallow while eating and drinking, and gas produced when bacteria in the large intestine ferment carbohydrates that haven't been completely digested or absorbed earlier in the digestive tract.
Your body gets rid of this gas naturally through burping or passing wind. The amount can vary considerably depending on what you eat, how you eat and how your digestive system responds to different foods.
Having gas, therefore, doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong with your digestion.
Bloating refers to a feeling of fullness, pressure, tightness or swelling in the abdomen. You might describe your stomach as feeling unusually full after eating or notice that your clothes feel tighter around your waist as the day progresses.
Although trapped or increased gas can contribute to this feeling, gas isn't the only possible explanation. Constipation, changes in how food and gas move through the digestive tract, sensitivity within the gut and hormonal changes can also play a role.
This is why someone can feel very bloated without necessarily having an unusually large amount of intestinal gas.
Bloating and distension are common symptoms in IBS, and the terms are often used interchangeably. However, there's another useful distinction to make: bloating is what you feel, while abdominal distension is a visible or measurable increase in the size of your abdomen.
You can experience one without the other. Some people feel significant pressure and fullness without their abdomen looking noticeably different, while others may see their abdomen become more distended as the day progresses.
There isn't one single cause of gas and bloating. Sometimes it's related to what you've eaten, but the way you eat, how food moves through your digestive system and how your body responds to certain carbohydrates can all play a part.
Here are some of the most common reasons you might find yourself feeling unusually gassy or bloated.
If you tend to rush through meals, you may be swallowing more air along with your food. Eating quickly, taking large bites or talking while chewing can all increase the amount of air entering your digestive system.
Eating quickly can also make it easier to eat beyond the point of comfortable fullness because your body hasn't had as much time to register that you've had enough.
Food isn't the only way air gets into your digestive tract. Aerophagia is the term used for swallowing excessive amounts of air, which can contribute to burping, gas and feelings of abdominal discomfort.
You may swallow more air when you:
chew gum or suck on hard lollies
eat or drink very quickly
drink through a straw
smoke
talk frequently while eating
Most swallowed air eventually comes back up as a burp, although some can travel further through the digestive tract.
Soft drinks, sparkling water and other carbonated beverages contain dissolved carbon dioxide. Once you drink them, that gas is released within the digestive system.
For many people this simply results in burping, but carbonated drinks can contribute to feelings of fullness and bloating, particularly when consumed quickly or in larger quantities.
Some of the gas in your digestive tract is actually produced by the bacteria living in your large intestine.
Certain carbohydrates aren't completely digested or absorbed in the small intestine. When they reach the large intestine, gut bacteria ferment them, producing gases in the process.
Foods that may contribute to gas in some people include:
beans, chickpeas and lentils
onions and garlic
broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage
certain fruits
wheat and some grain-based foods
some dairy products
certain artificial or alternative sweeteners
But this doesn't mean these foods are “bad for your gut.” Many gas-producing foods—including legumes, vegetables, fruits and wholegrains—are nutritious sources of fibre, vitamins and minerals.
How much gas they produce and whether that gas causes uncomfortable symptoms can vary significantly from person to person.
Increasing your fibre intake can be beneficial, particularly if your usual diet is relatively low in fibre. However, adding a large amount too quickly can sometimes mean more gas and bloating at first.
Fibre reaches the large intestine, where certain types are fermented by gut bacteria. A sudden increase in foods such as legumes, wholegrains, bran, vegetables, fruit and seeds can therefore change the amount of fermentation occurring in your gut.
Bloating doesn't always start with something you've just eaten.
When stool moves slowly through the bowel or builds up, you may experience abdominal fullness, pressure and discomfort, sometimes alongside increased gas.
Constipation can involve more than simply not having a bowel movement every day. Other signs can include:
stools that are hard or difficult to pass
straining
going less frequently than is normal for you
feeling as though you haven't completely emptied your bowel
If you're regularly bloated and also experiencing changes in your bowel movements, constipation may be one factor worth considering.
Sometimes bloating simply follows a particularly large meal.
As your stomach fills with food and fluid, it naturally expands. Eating significantly more than usual can therefore leave you feeling full, tight or uncomfortable for some time afterwards.
Meals that are particularly high in fat can also remain in the stomach for longer because fat can slow gastric emptying. For some people, this contributes to prolonged feelings of fullness.
If bloating tends to appear after certain dairy foods, lactose could be involved.
Lactose is the natural sugar found in milk and dairy products. To digest it, the small intestine produces an enzyme called lactase. People with lactose intolerance produce insufficient lactase to fully digest the amount of lactose they consume.
The remaining lactose can then reach the large intestine, where bacteria ferment it. This can lead to symptoms such as:
gas
bloating
abdominal discomfort
diarrhoea
Importantly, lactose intolerance doesn't necessarily mean someone needs to avoid all dairy products. The amount of lactose people can tolerate varies, and some dairy products naturally contain much less lactose than others.
Lactose is actually one example of a broader group of carbohydrates known as FODMAPs.
FODMAP stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols. In simpler terms, they're certain short-chain carbohydrates that may not be completely absorbed in the small intestine.
They can attract water into the bowel and are readily fermented by gut bacteria, which can contribute to gas, bloating, abdominal discomfort and changes in bowel habits in sensitive people.
FODMAPs occur naturally in many everyday foods, including certain fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes and dairy products.
That doesn't mean everyone experiencing bloating should immediately start a low-FODMAP diet. It can be quite restrictive and isn't intended to involve permanently eliminating large numbers of foods. If FODMAPs appear to be a significant trigger, working with a dietitian can help identify individual sensitivities while maintaining a nutritionally balanced diet.
If you notice bloating after eating certain sugar-free confectionery, chewing gum, protein bars or low-sugar foods, check the ingredient list for sugar alcohols, also known as polyols.
Common examples include:
sorbitol
mannitol
maltitol
xylitol
erythritol
Depending on the particular polyol, some may be incompletely absorbed in the small intestine. They can then attract water into the bowel or be fermented by gut bacteria.
For some people—particularly when larger amounts are consumed—this can result in gas, bloating, abdominal discomfort or a laxative effect.
Individual tolerance varies considerably, so a food containing polyols won't necessarily cause digestive symptoms for everyone.

Not every episode of bloating comes directly from digestion.
For many women, bloating can become more noticeable before or during menstruation. Changes in hormones throughout the menstrual cycle can influence fluid retention and gastrointestinal function, which may contribute to feelings of abdominal fullness.
Digestive symptoms can also change during perimenopause and menopause, although persistent or unexplained bloating shouldn't automatically be attributed to hormones.
Keeping track of when bloating occurs may help identify whether symptoms tend to follow a recurring pattern.
Have you ever noticed your digestive system behaving differently when you're particularly stressed or anxious? There's a physiological reason for that.
The digestive tract and brain communicate through what's often called the gut-brain axis. Stress can influence how quickly food moves through the digestive tract and can also affect how strongly you perceive sensations such as fullness, pressure and discomfort.
As a result, some people experience more bloating, abdominal discomfort or changes in bowel habits during periods of stress.
This doesn't mean the symptoms are “just in your head.” The nervous system and digestive system are closely connected, and changes in one can influence the other.
Most occasional gas and bloating has a relatively straightforward explanation, but persistent symptoms can sometimes be associated with an underlying digestive condition.
For example, bloating can occur with conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), coeliac disease and other gastrointestinal disorders.
Rather than trying to diagnose the cause yourself—or eliminating multiple food groups in an attempt to find the culprit—it's worth speaking with a healthcare professional if bloating is persistent, worsening, unexplained or regularly affecting your everyday life.
Because gas and bloating can have many different causes, there isn't one strategy that will work for everyone. Rather than immediately cutting out entire food groups, it can be more helpful to look for patterns and make small changes based on what seems to trigger your symptoms.
Think about when your symptoms tend to occur. Do you become bloated shortly after a large meal? Does it happen after certain foods or drinks? Are symptoms worse when you're constipated, stressed or at a particular point in your menstrual cycle?
Keeping a simple food and symptom diary for a short period can help you spot patterns that aren't immediately obvious. You might record:
what you ate and drank
approximate portion sizes
when the bloating or gas started
bowel movements or constipation
physical activity
periods of unusual stress
menstrual cycle changes, where relevant
The aim isn't to scrutinise every meal indefinitely. It's simply to identify whether the same triggers appear repeatedly.
If you regularly eat on the go or finish meals quickly, try slowing things down. Taking smaller bites, chewing thoroughly and allowing more time for meals may reduce the amount of air you swallow.
If large meals tend to leave you uncomfortable, you could also experiment with slightly smaller portions rather than eating until you feel overly full.
If you're trying to improve your diet by eating more fibre, avoid increasing your intake dramatically all at once.
Introduce more wholegrains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds gradually, giving your digestive system time to adjust. Some extra gas can occur as gut bacteria ferment certain types of fibre, particularly when your intake suddenly increases.
Adequate fluid intake is also important when adding more fibre to your diet.
If constipation is contributing to your bloating, addressing it may help relieve some of that uncomfortable fullness.
Alongside adequate fibre and fluids, regular physical activity can help support normal bowel function. Even everyday movement such as walking can be beneficial.
If constipation is persistent, severe or isn't improving with basic dietary and lifestyle changes, speak with a pharmacist, doctor or other healthcare professional rather than continually increasing fibre on your own.
If you regularly drink soft drinks, sparkling water or other carbonated beverages, try reducing them for a period and see whether your symptoms change.
The same approach can be useful with other suspected triggers. For example, if you repeatedly notice symptoms after consuming large amounts of sugar-free products containing polyols, reducing the amount may help you determine whether they're contributing.
The key is to make one or two manageable changes at a time. If you change everything at once, it becomes much harder to know what actually made a difference.
When bloating becomes frustrating, it can be tempting to start removing dairy, gluten, legumes, fruit or other foods from your diet. But bloating after eating something doesn't necessarily mean you're intolerant to it—and unnecessarily restrictive diets can make it harder to get the nutrients you need.
If you suspect lactose, FODMAPs or another dietary component is regularly triggering significant symptoms, consider speaking with an accredited practising dietitian or healthcare professional. They can help investigate potential triggers without unnecessarily restricting your diet.
When gas and bloating become uncomfortable, it's easy to reach for a probiotic or digestive supplement hoping for a quick solution. While some products may be useful in particular circumstances, there isn't one supplement that will address every cause of bloating.
Probiotics contain live microorganisms that, when consumed in adequate amounts, may provide a health benefit. However, not all probiotics are the same. Different products can contain different species, strains, combinations and doses, which means research findings for one probiotic can't necessarily be applied to every product on the shelf.
Research into probiotics for digestive symptoms such as gas and bloating has produced mixed results. For example, a 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis published in Gastroenterology examined 82 randomised controlled trials involving more than 10,000 people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The researchers found that some probiotic strains and combinations may provide benefits for certain IBS symptoms. However, when specifically looking at abdominal bloating or distension, evidence of benefit for the probiotic combinations and Bacillus strains assessed was rated as very low certainty.
More recent research has continued to highlight this uncertainty. A 2026 umbrella review of 27 systematic reviews found that probiotics were associated with some improvements in certain IBS outcomes, but effects on bloating were small or inconsistent, and the overall certainty of the evidence remained predominantly low or very low.
That doesn't mean probiotics have no potential digestive-health applications. Rather, it means that a probiotic labelled for “gut health” shouldn't automatically be expected to relieve gas or bloating, and the usefulness of a probiotic may depend on the specific strain, the person taking it and the condition or symptom being studied.
If you decide to try a probiotic, look beyond the number of bacteria advertised on the front of the pack. Check which specific strains the product contains and whether there is evidence for those strains for the purpose you're considering. Different probiotic strains can have different properties and have been studied for different uses, so understanding what's actually in the product can help you make a more informed choice. Digestive enzymes help break components of food into forms the body can absorb. Your digestive system naturally produces many of these enzymes, so taking an additional enzyme supplement isn't automatically necessary.
However, certain enzymes can be useful when someone has difficulty digesting a particular food component. A good example is lactase, the enzyme responsible for breaking down lactose. People with lactose intolerance may use lactase products when consuming lactose-containing foods to help improve lactose digestion.
If constipation or inadequate dietary fibre is contributing to bloating, a fibre supplement may sometimes be useful. But more fibre isn't always better—particularly if your intake increases very quickly.
As mentioned before, some types of fibre are fermented by gut bacteria, so suddenly taking a large amount can actually increase gas and bloating initially. Fibre supplements should therefore be introduced gradually and taken according to their directions, with appropriate fluid intake.
Where possible, aim to get fibre from a varied diet containing vegetables, fruits, legumes, wholegrains, nuts and seeds, with supplements used to complement dietary intake where appropriate.
Gas and bloating are common digestive complaints, and an occasional bloated feeling after a large meal or certain foods isn't necessarily a cause for concern. Gas is a normal part of digestion, and everyday factors such as eating quickly, swallowing air, drinking fizzy drinks, increasing fibre or eating certain fermentable carbohydrates can all contribute.
